Announcements For May 19-23

Dear Students and Parents,

Congratulations to our fine senior class that has put four years of hard work into the University Band Program. These seniors are important people in the band and University High School. I wish them well after graduation and sincerely hope they keep in touch.

Due to the school board's vote to switching the middle school and high school schedules, there will be slight adjustments in the band schedule. Please note the following points:

  1. Jazz I and Jazz II will be held during the proposed "Zero" period rather than 7th Period. Transportation will not be available for students that wish to be enrolled in one of the jazz bands. The "Zero" Period will be 8:30-9:25am (MTRF) and 8:40-9:25 (W).
  2. Marching Band Rehearsals will consist of the following: Tuesday & Thursday Evenings (5pm-8pm). Brass/Woodwind sectionals will be 3:30-5:30pm on Wednesdays (brass and woodwinds will alternate weeks). Percussion Sectionals will be 4:00pm-7:00pm on Wednesdays.
  3. If you have received a survey for "Zero" Period interest, please say that you are INTERESTED! The survey is not a contract. At this point we do not know the status of what classes are offered during "zero" period. However, the more magnet classes (IB/GT) and Reading classes offered during the "Zero" period, the more flexible a student schedule can be. There will be fewer academic conflicts for students to take a band class.

Please do not forget to attend this year's Awards Night on Thursday, May 22nd at 7:00pm. Dress is semi-casual, however many students dress semi-formal. We will present awards to every class as well as announce the officers for 2008-2009.

Band Exams are beginning on Wednesday, May 21 and will conclude on Wednesday, May 28. Each section in each band has a specific date for testing. Section assignments are posted in both band rooms. All students are required to perform all 12 Major Scales and one prepared selection of the students' choice. Many students play old solos or all-county tryouts.

Graduation Band: Those students selected to be in the 2008-2009 Wind Ensemble are required to participate in graduation band. Students in graduation band are required to attend rehearsal on Thursday, May 29 after school (2:30-3:30) and are to report to the UCF arena on Friday, May 30 by 1:45pm. Students MUST provide their own transportation from UHS to UCF. In the past parents/students car pooled to the arena.

Summer Fundraising! - We have car washes available all summer for students to earn funds in their financial ledger. Please check below for the car wash schedule. We will also kick off Ad sales at our June Mini-Camps. More information on ad sales for next week's Band Update.

As usual, if you have any questions or concerns about the end of the year procedures or anything, please don't hesitate to contact me at the school.

Sincerely,
