Dear Cougars:

Thanks to all of those students that were able to come to the Mini-Camp last week. If the progress we made in that two-day Mini Camp is any indication of what kind of year we are going to have, we are all going to be in for one heck of a marching season! NOTE: If you did not go to the mini-camp and DID NOT contact any of the directors/section leaders of your absence, then you will not have a spot in the opener. You will be written into the ballad barring your attendance at Band Camp.

As you know, Mr. Jennings recently accepted the Director of Bands position at Freedom High School. We are truly going to miss Mr. Jennings, he was a fantastic teacher and an important part of our Cougar Band and Guard Family. The Freedom Patriot Band is lucky to have such a caring and fine teacher leading them next year.

We are currently trying to schedule classes for next year. Please take note of the following:

ZERO PERIOD OPTION
• What do we know?
The school will be offering an option for those students that are wishing to leave school at 3:00pm. Students will be able to take classes from Periods 0-5 for those students wishing to leave by 3:00pm. Otherwise students must take classes from Periods 1-6. Students that take a “zero” period class must provide transportation and cannot drop out in the middle of the year. Students that take a “zero” period MUST leave by 3pm and are NOT to take a 6th Period Class. As of today, we do not know what classes are offered during the “zero” period; however administration is proposing that English and Math classes are offered during the zero period. STUDENTS THAT HAVE TURNED IN A REQUEST FORM ARE THE ONLY STUDENTS THAT WILL BE OFFERED A ZERO PERIOD. If you are interested in taking a “zero” period and have not turned in a form, please e-mail me: philip.obado@ocps.net.

• Can students take seven periods then (0-6 Option)?
No. Students can only take 6 classes per day because of the class size amendment.

• Are there any band exceptions?
As of today, YES there is one exception. If a student takes Jazz 1 or Jazz 2, they must take another “band class” during periods 1-6. Students in Jazz 1 or 2 MUST take 7 periods (Period 0-6). Please e-mail me if you are interested in signing up for a Jazz Band or have questions. philip.obado@ocps.net

• Can I take a 0-6 (7 period day) option if I have an IB/GT Conflict?
Maybe. If the ONLY way to take a band class is to take a 0-6 Period option, please e-mail me right away: philip.obado@ocps.net. There may be a way to schedule you on a case by case basis.

WHAT WAS THE SUMMER BAND SCHEDULE AGAIN?
Band Camp: July 28-Aug 1 (8am-4pm); Aug 4-7 (8am-4pm), Aug 8 (Fri 1pm-8pm)
*** August 11 (Monday): 5pm-8pm; *** August 13 (Wednesday): 5pm-8pm
*** These are changed rehearsals from Aug 12/14. Please take note
There are other guard and percussion rehearsals. You can check out our entire rehearsal/performance calendar here: http://uhsband.com/2008-2009/08-09_band_dates.html

KEEP FUNDRAISING!
We ALWAYS stress to students and parents that they should not let the band assessments detract students from being in band. We would like each and every student to participate in fundraising projects to earn the funds necessary to cover the band assessments. The band directors ALWAYS work with every financial situation so anyone can participate.

• Summer Car Washes: These are held almost every weekend this summer for students to earn money in their financial ledgers. Check www.uhsband.com to sign up.
• Ad Sales: Students can pay off their entire band assessment just by selling ads around the community. You can get your own copy of the sales form here:
