Jazz is "America's classical music" and the University High School Band is proud to offer three jazz ensembles at the introductory, intermediate, and advanced levels. Whether you are new to the genre or an experienced jazz cat, you will find an ensemble that is fun and engaging.

Students explore the fundamentals of performance practices, improvisation, and music theory through a diverse repertoire of high-quality jazz literature. Students learn the basics of foundational jazz styles, use chord symbols, develop knowledge of musical structure, and study the history of jazz and its iconic musicians.

The Jazz Ensemble is our introductory group, open to any University student with an interest in learning the fundamentals of jazz improvisation, interpretation, and performance. No audition is required for this group, although membership in a concert ensemble or percussion class is expected.

Jazz Ensemble 1 is our intermediate group, for students with prior jazz experience. No audition is required for this group.

The Big Band is the most advanced performing ensemble in the University Band, performing multiple times each year at concerts, festivals, theme parks, and special events.
